Frequently Asked Questions

Contact us for more information about NodalSeismic and our approach to seismic data acquisition.

Who we are:
We are a data acquisition contractor that specializes in the unique and strategic operation of a completely cable-free seismic recording system. We provide 2D, 3D, 4D, and micro-seismic data acquisition services for a variety of industries, primarily oil and gas exploration.

Who we serve:

  • Geophysicists, geologists, and exploration managers at oil & gas companies

  • Geophysical consultants, project managers, spec data companies

What makes NodalSeismic different?

  • Our unique approach to our cable-free system has led to the successful acquisition of 3D data in difficult and hard to permit terrain.

  • Our Long Beach, CA project was set in an area that has more than 9,000 residents per square mile. We permitted and shot 38 square-miles over the busy city in 2 phases and maintained positive community reaction, and acquired high quality data. To date, there has not been a survey of its kind.

Where do we work?
We currently operate all over the United States, onshore.

Where is our system optimal?
Our system is extremely effective and efficient in all terrain, and exceptionally advantageous in the below areas:

  • Environmentally sensitive areas

  • Farmlands

  • Surveys with highways or streams running through your design

  • Urban areas

  • Wooded areas

Where are we based?
Dighton, Kansas and Lubbock, Texas, and a corporate office in Signal Hill, California

Where has NodalSeismic worked?
California, Montana, Texas, Wyoming, Oklahoma, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, Kansas.

How do we compare with cable crews?

  • Our bids are very competitive with cable crews

  • Due to the nature of our system and the way we operate it, we have high daily production rates that can shorten the length of your survey. Depending on the area, this can be significant, saving you time and money.

What’s your crew size?

  • Our crew is big enough for whatever project(s) you’re working on

  • Our system and operations are flexible - we can split our crew and system to be in different places at the same time.

  • We require fewer personnel on jobs. On an 189 square-mile job, 1/3 the size of a cable crew.

What kind of sources work with your system?

  • All source types

  • Vibes: we own a fleet of Hemi 60s

  • Dynamite: we use Shotpro II shooting packs and Seismic Source Boom Box

  • Mini vibes

  • Accelerated Weight Drop

About the Technology

  • Our nodes are autonomous recording units that operate independently of each other

  • There are no external cables or connectors

  • All necessary components are internal: Geophone, A/D convertor, solid-state memory, battery, and GPS are safely locked inside a hard shell only 6 inches tall, 5 inches in diameter, and nearly 5 pounds in weight.

  • Refer to our Technology page for more information.

How much does each SmartSolo weigh?
Each node weighs approximately 5 pounds. See SmartSolo Specs.

What are the benefits?

  • Zero troubleshooting

  • Increased design flexibility

  • Our system is light and we move quick – this greatly increases productivity

  • Greatly reduced HSE exposure – see our Safety page

  • The nodes weigh 1/10 the weight of cable per station

  • Smaller field crew size

  • Reduces cost & HSE exposure

  • Greatly reduced weather delay risks

  • High system reliability

  • 99.7% channel recovery and 100% system uptime. Once-in-once-out deployment.

  • Reduced footprint: No cables or wires. Easy to bury to eliminate obstructions for surface owners, trip-and-fall hazards, and theft prevention.

  • Flexible deployment: Easy avoidance of no-permit areas. Does not constrain survey design with cables.

Can you bury the SmartSolo?
Yes, the SmartSolo can be completely buried with up to 12” of dirt covering. The internal GPS will still maintain optimal signal.

Added Technology Benefits: Continuous-recording capability
Our system surpasses traditional surveys with continuous-recording capability. Simultaneously recording passive data from your project allows for seismic interferometry and travel-time tomography analyses for improved velocity models.
